6. All knowledge claims should be open to rational criticism. On what grounds and to what extent would you agree with this assertion?
I am FOR this statement.
I feel that knowledge claims should be open to rational criticism because they are not completely proven. There are some aspects which have not been proven and therefore they could still be wrong.
Although they are not totally proven I still believe they should be believed true until PROVEN WRONG. Criticism could then help motivate people to get to the bottom of it or create a more open minded public opinion on the issue.
To begin with I would define a knowledge claim and give an example of one in my introduction.
When answering this question, I would address the fact that it is not completely true and that people should be able to voice their opinions on something that has not been proven. They have the right to believe it is wrong although I would say that people also have the right to consider it true as well.
I would talk about how a knowledge claim is a generally accepted claim that is said to be true but cannot or has not been proven properly YET.
I would then go on to talk about how different cultures, religions, etc would have idfferent opinions on different knowledge claims (good example = Big Bang Theory). I would explain how they may have been brought up to think differently, or to learn to accept such claims.
Lastly I would have to explain that although I agree wit hthis statement, I do not believe that all knowledge claims should be subject to harsh criticism which would then lead to the discrediting of that claim. I believe these claims must still be seen as the most true opinion in terms of what it is saying so that things do not get messed up and wild theories emerge that make no sense but are seen as just as true because the original claim did not have enough evidence. There should be room for criticism that allows people to think about the claim and maybe motivate them to get to the bottom of the claim, but not enough to throw the entire claim, and all others, into the dark. This would mean that most of the things we know in modern day science and history (two very important areas of knowledge) will be seen as false and fake information. It will change the way people think and throw almost everything we "know" into the dark. We wil then not "know" nearly as much as we do now.
Everyone is allowed the freedom of opinion, though, and speech and therefore they should be able to question certain things, but they should do so sensibly.

7. “We see and understand things not as they are but as we are.” Discuss this claim in relation to at least two ways of knowing.
My opinion on this is that people come from different backgrounds, religions, and cultures and therefore their perception of different things may be different to other peoples perception of the same thing.
Basically different people believe different things. Also they may not understand something because of the language barrier and misunderstandings occur.
Firstly I would explain what the ways of knowing are. Then I would explain which two are the most related to this statement. I would write all this in my introduction, and then I would move onto the next paragraph where I would explain the first of the ways of knowing in relation to this statement.
I would say that different backgrounds influecnce this way of knowing by…
Then I would do the same for the second way of knowing.
Basically because we are different we understand things how we were brought up to, or how the way we are lets us understand and see things.

9. Discuss the claim that some areas of knowledge are discovered and others are invented.
Some things, such as fire, is discovered. People did not make fire, they discovered it. It was possible and was there before people made it. Fire could have been the result of a dry season or lightning hitting a tree etc. So when people made fire, it was not like it was the first fire ever, there had been fires before due to natural causes. Things that were invented, are things such as the wheel. People invented and made the wheel. They though of the concept and then "brought it to life". The wheel is not naturally occurring and would not exist if man had not made it.
In terms of knowledge, electricity was discovered by someone who experimented with energy etc and brought about electricity which allowed people to run things such as light and machinery. The way the electricity travels throug ha cicruit, and then turns on a light bulb is invented because people invented the light bulb, and therefore also took into account how it should work. Therefore how the lightbul works is knowledge that has been invented.
